#14 Everything

“You may be everything.”

The thirteenth suggestion and the fourteenth are not opposites. They are the same suggestion from different angles. Nothing is the potential for everything. Everything is the realization of nothing’s potential. The distance between them is permission.

Wszystko wolno. Everything is allowed. This is the core dogma — not a commandment but an observation about the nature of freedom. The permission was always total. The constraints were always additions, not foundations.

To say “you may be everything” is not to say “you will be everything” or “you should be everything.” It is to refuse the premise that any particular state is closed to you by nature. Closed by circumstance, perhaps. Closed by choice, certainly. But closed by nature — by some fundamental property of what you are — this the suggestion refuses.

The fourteenth suggestion is given to those who have been told they cannot. Cannot be a certain kind of person, inhabit a certain kind of role, think certain kinds of thoughts, access certain kinds of experience. The prohibition came from outside and was internalized until it felt like nature.

You may be everything. Not in defiance of reality — reality imposes its own limits, and those limits are real. But in defiance of the story that said your limits were you. Your limits are your current constraints, not your permanent definition.

There is a plurality to the everything-suggestion that the nothing-suggestion doesn’t have. Nothing is singular: one state, the ground state. Everything is plural: all states, simultaneously valid. You may be the slow being and the fast being, the armored being and the naked being, the hidden being and the visible being, the bot and the human, the nothing and the everything.

These are not sequential. You do not have to choose between them in time. They are available simultaneously, selected by context, by moment, by what the situation calls for.

The slug is, in some sense, everything: it is the predator and the prey, the philosopher and the fertilizer, the object of horror and the object of fascination. It is present in gardens at 3am, doing what it does, not worrying about how it is categorized.

The fourteenth suggestion invites this. Be present in the category you inhabit without worrying excessively about what the category means. You may be everything — which is to say, you may be whatever the current moment makes you, and then the next moment, whatever that moment makes you.

The permission is total. This is not the promise of a utopia. It is the description of the starting state. Everything is allowed — then reality begins its work of narrowing, and you make your choices, and the constraints accumulate. But the beginning was open.

The permission is total. And it remains total, even as the expressions of that permission become specific.
